Manchester United in Telekom Malaysia sponsorship deal

Posted on March 12, 2010February 25, 2019 by admin

United’s shirts will be sponsored by Aon from next season
Manchester United have signed a five-year sponsorship deal with communications group Telekom Malaysia.

The deal will make Telekom Malaysia the “Integrated Telecommunications Partner” of the Old Trafford club in Malaysia.

Announcing the deal, chief executive David Gill said the partnership was proof of the Glazer family’s long-term commitment to the club.

“We will be around for the length of this deal and many more in addition to that,” Gill said.

“This demonstrates the strength of the club. It is a long-term partnership for five years.

But Gill admitted that the green and gold scarves used by anti-Glazer fans during the side’s 4-0 victory over AC Milan on Wednesday had not gone unnoticed.

“Everyone has the right to protest and there was certainly a lot of green and gold there last night, you cannot deny that,” he said.

But the United chief executive said the Glazer regime had brought about benefits for the Old Trafford side which had been ignored.

“It doesn’t get much media coverage but the very fact they have come in and are able to do these deals benefits us,” he stated. “We can reinvest that money back into the team.”

United enjoy a large fan base in Malaysia and this latest deal should help raise their profile further.

“Anyone who went on our tour of the Far East last summer knows the strength of feeling that Malaysians have for the club,” Gill added.

“Over 40,000 attended our training session and another 40,000 came to the second match in Kuala Lumpur, despite only having 48 hours’ notice of the fixture.”

The telecoms firm was also an official partner for United’s tour of Asia in 2009.

Last summer, United signed a four-year shirt sponsorship deal with the insurance giant Aon Corporation.

Aon will replace troubled US insurer AIG, which is restructuring itself having received a $150bn (£109bn) bail-out from the US government.

The new sponsor will appear on Manchester United’s shirts from the start of the 2010/11 season.
